Brenden Bates: Under team control
Thursday, January 8, 2026 9:41 PM Free Agent

Bates caught four of five targets for 48 yards over a combined nine regular-season games for Houston and Cleveland in 2025.

Bates spent the first half of the season with the Texans before latching on with the Browns for the second half. While Cleveland often targeted its tight ends, most of those went to Harold Fannin (groin) and David Njoku (knee). Bates will become an exclusive rights free agent and can be brought back for one year at the league minimum.

Jordan Watkins: Little involvement in rookie year
Thursday, January 8, 2026 9:38 PM Free Agent

Watkins was active for four games in 2025 and finished the regular season with two receptions on three targets for 26 yards.

Watkins suffered a high-ankle sprain in the preseason but was still able to make the 53-man roster as a rookie. The fourth-round pick was a healthy scratch for all but four games even with the 49ers dealing with depth issues at the wide receiver position. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has a track record of not relying on rookie wideouts, so there is a chance we see Watkins' role increase as a sophomore in 2025.

Blake Whiteheart: Enters restricted free agency
Thursday, January 8, 2026 9:31 PM Free Agent

Whiteheart had two catches on six targets for four yards over 17 regular-season games in 2025.

Whiteheart spent the entire season on the Browns' 53-man roster as the team's third tight end. Cleveland's tight ends turned out to be major targets, but he was never a factor in the passing attack, even in the final few games when injuries hit both David Njoku (knee) and Harold Fannin (groin). Whiteheart enters restricted free agency this offseason.

Skyy Moore: Finds home in SF as return man
Thursday, January 8, 2026 9:23 PM Free Agent

Moore finished the 2025 regular season with five receptions for 87 yards, two carries for 11 yards and 1,198 combined return yards in 17 appearances.

Moore was traded to the 49ers this past offseason after falling out of favor as a receiver during his three years with the Chiefs. The shifty wideout was used sparingly on offense (seven touches for 98 yards), but he solidified a role on special teams as San Francisco's primary return man. Moore appeared in all 17 games this regular season and finished with career highs in kick return yards (907) and punt return yards (291). The 24-year-old is a strong candidate to return to the 49ers next season after thriving as the team's return specialist in 2025.

Josh Whyle: Sees more snaps after Kraft injury
Thursday, January 8, 2026 7:10 PM Free Agent

Whyle logged five catches (on six targets) for 36 yards and a touchdown across eight regular-season games with the Packers in 2025.

Whyle spent the first half of the season on the Packers' practice squad after failing to make the Titans' 53-man roster at the end of training camp. There wasn't a path to playing time for the third-year tight end until Tucker Kraft tore his ACL in Week 9 against the Panthers, which prompted the Packers to sign Whyle to the active roster in early November to serve as the team's TE2 behind Luke Musgrave. Whyle didn't see more than one target in any of his eight regular-season appearances, serving mostly as a blocker on offense. He will have the ability to test the waters during the 2026 offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

Xavier Guillory: Visits with Ravens
Thursday, January 8, 2026 6:57 PM Free Agent

Baltimore hosted Guillory (collarbone) for a tryout Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Guillory is likely auditioning for a potential reserve/future contract with Baltimore. The undrafted rookie out of Arizona State spent last offseason with the Ravens, but he was cut by the team with an injury settlement prior to the start of the regular season.

Luke Musgrave: Quiet end to regular season
Thursday, January 8, 2026 6:53 PM Lions, Tigers, & Jaguars OH MY

Musgrave played just two offensive snaps and was not targeted during Green Bay's regular-season finale against the Vikings.

Musgrave has operated as Green Bay's top tight end since Tucker Kraft (ACL) suffered a season-ending injury Week 9. His receiving production has been underwhelming, however, and despite suiting up for all 17 regular-season games, Musgrave has totaled just 24 catches for 252 yards (on 31 targets) without a single touchdown. He surpassed 50 receiving yards in just one of those 17 appearances. Musgrave will continue to handle the No. 1 tight end role during Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Bears.

Kayshon Boutte: Added to injury report Thursday
Thursday, January 8, 2026 6:39 PM TRUZZ The Process

Boutte (hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday.

Boutte wasn't listed on the Patriots' initial injury report Wednesday, so it's unclear if the wideout emerged from that session with a hamstring issue or sustained an injury during Thursday's practice. Friday's final report will reveal whether Boutte approaches Sunday's playoff opener against the Chargers with an injury designation, in any case.

Omarion Hampton: Logs another missed practice
Thursday, January 8, 2026 6:18 PM Marvin Gardens

Hampton (ankle) was listed as a non-participant in practice Thursday, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports.

Per Smith, offensive coordinator Greg Roman previously noted that Hampton would be "involved some" in Thursday's session, but that didn't equate to the running back -- who also didn't practice Wednesday -- being deemed an official participant. Hampton now has one more opportunity to log practice reps before the Chargers assign injury designations in advance of Sunday night's playoff opener against the Patriots. If he ends up limited or out this weekend, added backfield opportunities would be available for Kimani Vidal, Hassan Haskins and Jaret Patterson.

Grant Calcaterra: Upgrades to limited practice
Thursday, January 8, 2026 5:45 PM Free Agent

Calcaterra (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday.

Calcaterra did not practice Wednesday, but he appears to be making progress ahead of Sunday's wild-card round matchup against the 49ers. Meanwhile, top tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) has logged back-to-back limited practices after having sat out Week 18. It appears both TEs have a solid chance of being available for Sunday's contest, and Friday's practice report will officially reveal whether either Calcaterra or Goedert are assigned an official injury tag.
