Kaleb Johnson: Disappointing workload as rookie
Friday, January 9, 2026 5:11 PM

Johnson recorded 28 carries for 69 yards while securing one of two targets for nine yards over 10 appearances during the 2025 regular season.

Although Johnson was a third-round pick by the Steelers in the 2025 NFL Draft, playing time was hard to come by during his rookie year, as he played double-digit offensive snaps in just one game. He was also a healthy scratch for the final three weeks of the regular season. Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell served as the Steelers' clear top running backs throughout the year. Johnson could have a chance to compete for more work in 2026 if Gainwell -- who is slated to become an unrestricted free agent during the offseason -- heads elsewhere. Even if Gainwell plays for another team next year, Johnson could face an uphill battle for playing time as long as Warren remains in Pittsburgh.

Chris Myarick: Released by Miami
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:57 PM

The Dolphins released Myarick from the practice squad Friday.

Myarick failed to make the Dolphins' 53-man roster in August but has been a practice squad staple since Oct. 22. The tight end was not elevated for any games this season. The 30-year-old is available to sign with any practice squad or team that may need an additional tight end throughout the playoffs.

Jacob Cowing: Questionable but still on IR
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:56 PM

Cowing (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's wild-card round game against the Eagles, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports, but the wide receiver remains on injured reserve.

Cowing would need to be activated from IR prior to Sunday's game to have a chance to suit up. The 2024 fourth-round pick missed the entire 2025 regular season due to a hamstring injury, so he's unlikely to have a substantial role even if he plays.

Mason Rudolph: Sees limited action in 2025
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:54 PM

Rudolph completed 38 of 52 passes for 310 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing seven times for six yards over five appearances during the 2025 regular season.

The bulk of Rudolph's playing time during the regular season came in the middle of the year, as he entered the team's Week 11 matchup against Cincinnati in relief after Aaron Rodgers got hurt before starting against the Bears in Week 12. Rudolph will remain under contract with the Steelers for the 2026 campaign, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the team bring in other options at quarterback if Aaron Rodgers retires during the offseason.

Jonnu Smith: Added to injury report Friday
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:40 PM

Smith (glute) was limited at practice Friday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Smith worked fully Thursday, so his addition to the Steelers' injury report a day later is notable. Added context regarding the tight end's status for Monday night's playoff opener against the Texans is slated to arrive via Pittsburgh's final injury report Saturday. Though Smith had a five-catch effort Week 17 (when No. 1 wideout DK Metcalf was suspended), his production during the regular season was sporadic, resulting in a 38-222-2 line on 54 targets in 17 contests, a pace well off the career-best numbers he logged with Miami in 2024.

Ricky Pearsall: Questionable, still no practice
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:39 PM

Pearsall (knee/ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Philadelphia despite not practicing at all this week, Noah Furtado of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Pearsall hasn't practiced or played since Week 17, but the 49ers will at least leave the door open for a miraculous recovery at the last minute. Fellow wideouts Demarcus Robinson and Kendrick Bourne will take on more playing time if Pearsall is declared inactive before the team's 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday.

George Kittle: Cleared to play
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:36 PM

Kittle (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's wild-card game at Philadelphia, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Kittle played 95 percent of snaps Week 18, returning from a one-game absence for the 13-3 loss to Seattle. He'll likely handle an every-down role again this weekend against another one of the NFC's top defenses.

Jaylen Warren: Back to full participation Friday
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:33 PM

Warren (illness) practiced without limitations Friday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Warren missed Thursday's practice due to an illness, but his return to full participation Friday assuages any concerns about his availability for Monday's wild-card round home game against the Texans. He's set to split backfield duties with Kenneth Gainwell against the stout Houston defense, which allowed the fourth-fewest rushing yards to running backs in the regular season.

Zamir White: Handles just 12 carries in 2025
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:07 PM

White took 12 total carries for 32 yards and caught four of six targets for 24 yards over six games in 2025.

White was a healthy scratch more often than not in the final season of his rookie contract with the Raiders, appearing in just six of 17 games while falling well behind Ashton Jeanty and Raheem Mostert (knee) in the pecking order at running back. Jeanty is slated to remain in a workhorse role next season, so White may look to compete for a role elsewhere in free agency.

Grant Calcaterra: Ready for Sunday
Friday, January 9, 2026 4:04 PM

Calcaterra (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation ahead of Sunday's wild-card round matchup with the 49ers.

Calcaterra was able to upgrade to a full participant in Friday's practice after being limited Thursday and a non-participant Wednesday. The tight end is all set to suit up for Sunday's playoff contest as the No. 2 option behind Dallas Goedert.
