Kelly Akharaiyi: Dumped by Buffalo
Friday, August 8, 2025 11:12 AM
The Bills waived Akharaiyi on Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
It's the second time in the last 17 days that Akharaiyi has been cut by Buffalo. The Bills needed the roster spot in order to sign kicker Caden Davis ahead of Saturday's preseason contest against the Giants.

Caden Davis: Signs with Buffalo
Friday, August 8, 2025 11:10 AM
The Bills signed Davis on Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Tyler Bass is dealing with a pelvic injury, so the Bills need a kicker for at least Saturday's preseason contest against the Giants. Davis has yet to kick in a regular-season NFL game.

Jelani Woods: Two receptions in preseason opener
Friday, August 8, 2025 11:02 AM
Woods had two receptions for 23 yards on three targets in Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore.
Woods was once viewed as a possible impact player in the passing game, but has missed back-to-back full seasons due to injuries (hamstring issues in 2023 and turf toe in 2024). The 2022 third-round pick isn't likely to have much of a role this season even if he makes the final roster with the team's selection of rookie first-rounder Tyler Warren. However, Woods could find his way to relevance on another roster with a good preseason showing.

D.J. Montgomery: No targets in preseason opener
Friday, August 8, 2025 10:59 AM
Montgomery was not targeted and did not have a carry in Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore. He was seen being assisted to the medical tent during the game, Sports Illustrated's Jake Arthur reports.
It's not clear if Montgomery was injured during the game or just wasn't part of the preseason game plan. Either way, it's not a good sign of his chances to make the final roster.

Khalil Herbert: Second half usage in preseason loss
Friday, August 8, 2025 10:50 AM
Herbert had seven carries for 29 yards, including a one-yard touchdown, in Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore.
While Herbert scored a touchdown and had a decent performance, he also didn't play until the second half. It looks like he's a solid fourth on the running back depth chart at this point which means he's no lock to make the final roster.

Spencer Shrader: Solid performance in preseason loss
Friday, August 8, 2025 10:43 AM
Shrader made three of four field-goal attempts in Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore. He missed a 52-yard attempt.
Shrader was seen having a significant lead over Maddux Trujillo for the placekicking job in training camp and Thursday's game should only help his cause. Trujillo may get more of an opportunity in the next preseason game (he converted his only extra-point attempt in Thursday's game).

Josh Downs: Held out of preseason opener
Friday, August 8, 2025 10:41 AM
Downs and most other veteran starters didn't play in Thursday's 24-16 preseason loss at Baltimore.
Fellow wideouts Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce also were rested, leaving Adonai Mitchell, Ashton Dulin, Anthony Gould and rookie tight end Tyler Warren as the the top targets for QB Anthony Richardson, who left the game after a handful of snaps due to a finger dislocation on his throwing hand. Richardson should be fine by Week 1, but the QB situation remains a major concern for Downs' fantasy value after his 2024 production was heavily concentrated in the games Joe Flacco played. Daniel Jones, for all his flaws, is a better bet than Richardson to support fantasy-viable pass catchers -- and especially receivers that rely on short-area targets, like Downs and Pittman. The Colts may give their starters some run in the second or third preseason game, although it's unclear if Richardson or Jones will take the QB reps.

Anthony Gould: Makes mistakes in preseason opener
Friday, August 8, 2025 10:38 AM
Gould had two receptions for 12 yards on four targets in Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore. He also had a dropped kickoff and two dropped passes, according to James Boyd of The Athletic.
Gould has made a strong impression in training camp and had some nice plays in Thursday's game, but the mistakes probably hurt his chances to have a larger role in the offense.

Caleb Williams: Not scheduled to play Sunday
Friday, August 8, 2025 9:27 AM
Williams isn't scheduled to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Dolphins, per CHGO Sports.
This likely means most of Chicago's projected starters will be held out, although we figure to see them at least once this preseason as they continue learning coach Ben Johnson's playbook. With Williams held out, Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum figures to get the start Sunday.

Anthony Richardson: X-rays come back clean
Friday, August 8, 2025 9:11 AM
Richardson's X-rays on his dislocated finger came back clean Thursday night, and he's expected to return to practice "in the coming days," NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports.
Richardson was injured while taking a sack in the first quarter of Thursday's preseason opener against the Ravens. He was immediately removed and ruled out for the remainder of the exhibition, but it sounds like Richardson has avoided any serious issues. However, any missed practice time will allow Daniel Jones to soak up all of the reps with the first-team offense, as Jones and Richardson continue to battle for the starting job. Richardson has been one of the most injury-prone quarterbacks in the league since entering the NFL as the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 Draft. Both Richardson and Jones are good bets to make multiple starts each in 2025.
