Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Jones suffered a bruised knee during Sunday's 26-15 loss at Houston and is "day-to-day," David Lombardi of SFStandard.com reports.

At the same time, Shanahan relayed to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that he doesn't "think it's a long shot" for No. 1 QB Brock Purdy (toe) to return to action this coming Sunday at the Giants. As such, the signal-caller situation in San Francisco will be watched closely as the week goes on to get a sense of who between Jones and Purdy will be under center Week 9. In Week 8, Jones fell shy of 200 yards passing (193, to be exact) for a second straight game, but he tossed two touchdowns versus one interception and rushed twice for 23 yards.

Jones completed 19 of 32 passes for 193 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while adding two rushes for 23 yards in the 49ers' 26-15 loss to the Texans on Sunday. He also threw a two-point conversion pass.

Jones drew a fourth consecutive start for Brock Purdy (toe), but the stage of diminishing returns may be starting to manifest. The 2021 first-round pick struggled to help the offense achieve any kind of continuity for long stretches, and the 49ers were ultimately shut out in both the first and fourth quarters. Jones connected with tight ends George Kittle (17 yards) and Jake Tonges (two yards) for his pair of touchdowns, yet his interception at the Texans' one-yard line just before the two-minute warning essentially sealed San Francisco's loss. Purdy is reportedly getting close to a return after putting in six limited practice sessions over the last two weeks, but it remains to be seen who'll be under center in a favorable Week 9 road matchup against the Giants.

Jones gets his sixth start in the past seven contests in place of Purdy, who is still bothered by a turf toe injury. Jones has averaged 280.8 yards per game on 67.0 percent passing while tossing six touchdowns versus four interceptions. Croskey-Merritt rushed nine times for 25 yards and failed to bring in his only target in the Commanders' 28-7 loss to the Chiefs on Monday night.

Croskey-Merritt was held under 3.0 yards per carry for the second consecutive game in what was a second straight lopsided loss for the Commanders. The rookie back outpaced backfield mates Chris Rodriguez and Jeremy McNichols by eight carries each, but McNichols was much more involved in the passing game while recording a team-high five catches and 64 yards while also logging a co-team-high six targets. Meanwhile, Croskey-Merritt continued to be an afterthought in the passing game, a trend that conspires to limit his fantasy value when rushing opportunities and/or running room is at a premium. The outlook doesn't get any rosier Week 9, as the Commanders welcome a tough Seahawks defense to town for a Sunday night showdown.

Croskey-Merritt took 13 carries for 33 yards while catching one of two targets for a loss of one yard in Sunday's 44-22 loss to Dallas.

Croskey-Merritt couldn't find any running lanes against one of the worst rushing defenses in the league Sunday. The seventh-round rookie still led Washington's backfield in touches, but he ceded a short rushing touchdown to backup Chris Rodriguez (3-12-1). It is unclear whether Jayden Daniels (hamstring) or Marcus Mariota will be under center for next Monday's tilt against the Chiefs, but Croskey-Merritt figures to continue spearheading the Commanders' backfield rotation in Week 8.

Robinson caught three of four targets for 48 yards in Sunday's 38-20 loss to the Eagles.

Robinson led the Giants in receiving yards on a quiet day for Jaxson Dart and the passing game. Darius Slayton (hamstring) returned from a two-game absence and led the team with five targets. Robinson should continue to operate underneath, while Slayton works as the team's top downfield wide receiver in Week 9 against the 49ers.

Robinson finished with six receptions on 12 targets for 95 yards in Sunday's 33-32 loss to Denver.

Robinson paced the Giants in receptions and yardage for the second week running, this time also surpassing Lil'Jordan Humphrey in targets. The 24-year-old Robinson is now averaging 5.7 receptions and 69.7 yards in three games since taking over for for Malik Nabers (knee) as the Giants' top wideout. Robinson provides enough upside in his current role to warrant flex consideration against the Eagles next Sunday.

Boutte caught three of five targets for 75 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 32-13 win over the Browns.

Mack Hollins surprisingly led the Patriots in catches, receiving yards and targets, but Boutte made a big splash with a 39-yard TD strike from Drake Maye, one of three passing touchdowns by the second-year QB in the third quarter. Boutte has gotten into the end zone in three straight games, posting a 10-223-4 line on 12 targets during that surge, and he'll look to keep rolling in Week 9 against the Falcons.

Boutte recorded two receptions on two targets for 55 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-13 win over the Titans.

Boutte saw only two targets, his lowest total since Week 2. However, he still managed to turn in a productive effort thanks primarily to a 39-yard touchdown just before halftime to give the Patriots a lead they wouldn't concede. Boutte has now found the end zone in consecutive games, also logging his second- and third-best yardage totals of the season in those contests.

Butker converted all four of his extra-point tries and didn't attempt a field goal in Monday's 28-7 win over the Commanders.

It was a relatively quiet night for Butker with Kansas City getting into the end zone four times. It was the second time this season Butker has finished a contest without a made field goal. He's 12-for-15 on field-goal tries this season.

Butker made his only field-goal attempt and all four of his PATs in Sunday's 31-0 win over the Raiders.

Butker went a third straight week without attempting multiple field goals in a game, connecting on his only attempt from 38 yards in the victory. The kicker has now made 12 of 15 field-goal tries while going 18-for-21 on PATs over seven games this season.

Purdy (toe) has a chance to return to action Sunday at the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "It's too early to say," coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "I don't think it's a long shot. We'll see how he's doing on Wednesday."
